Technobasalt-Invest conducted research on concrete tensile strength in bending when reinforced by basalt chopped fiber

02.12.2009

Research and development enterprise Budkonstruktsiya conducted research on concrete tensile strength in bending when reinforced by basalt chopped fiber.

The main objective was to estimate the tensile strength of concrete reinforced by basalt chopped fiber for the purpose of assessing the possibility of using the fiber for the reinforcement of concrete and ferroconcrete structures.

As a result of testing, the following conclusions about the influence of fiber reinforcement (length and content of basalt fiber) on the nature of disintegration and on the concrete tensile strength were made:

Reinforcement by 12 mm basalt fiber does not change the fragile nature of concrete cubes’ disintegration in bending and a 1-2% fiber content results in 1,19 – 1,23 times higher concrete tensile strength (axial and bending) of the B20 quality / class.

Reinforcement by 24 and 50 mm basalt fiber with 1-3 % fiber content changes the nature of disintegration in bending to plastic and fiber engagement into tension is observed. When reinforcing by 24 and 50 mm basalt fiber with 1-3% content, the tensile strength (axial and bending) of the B20 quality concrete increases by 1.79-2.24 times. And there is no difference between using 24 or 50mm fiber.

Given the test results, Research and Development enterprise Budkonstruktsiya LLC recommends the use of basalt fiber for reinforcement of concrete and ferroconcrete structures.
